038 - Power and Speed - SEMA 2015

Mike, Tom and Tad in studio.  Crunch is home sick.  Feel better buddy and see you next week.

Tom (Hollywood) returned from a western swing including SEMA 2015.  It's no secret that Tom works for Manley Performance and that allows him to get some info that we would not normally have.  Tom gives some thoughts on Chevy and the new Camaro, Pro Stock, and a few other things.  We had a listener call who was at the show and did not say hello.  We know celebrities can be a little intimidating, but seriously, if you are someplace we are at say hi.  Do not feel bad about going up to a guest either.  The caller went over and talked to Joe Krivickas from Precision Turbo and Engine and managed to get a nice deal.  Trust me, it's good to say hi.

We are working on shirts, so make sure you alert Hollywood of this failure to follow through.

Live again next week Monday night at 7:00 PM EST on Mixlr.com.  Call in number 908 751 0211.  Live callers welcome, and this will be the line for giveaways.

037 - Power and Speed - Tad's Subaru and Pro Stock Speculation

Mike, Crunch, and Tad in studio.  Tom is attending the SEME show in Las Vegas.  We are not sure when (or if) he will ever come back. (it's pretty nice out there)

The good news is Tad's Subaru has moved!  The bad news is not under it's own power.  Tad's Subaru is a mess, plain and simple.  The car needs lots of attention, and Mike is pretty sure he can get it running in no time flat.  How hard can it be?

NASIOC "Proven Power and Performance"  seems to be under Mike's skin for some reason. (it could be the moron who called JR out on the show)  It's easy to understand how trolls on a forum can have so little understanding that they think somehow a fake dyno number will translate into a great MPH at the track.  The IAG Performance Subaru is no joke, and the dyno numbers have nothing to do with it.  You want "Proven" performance, get your car down the track and post a MPH.

NHRA Pro Stock has gone through some shake ups with the rule changes, and there are lots of tidbits of info out there.  How many will show up for the season opener is a good question.  A loyal listener calls and the discussion gets started.

036 - Power and Speed - JRTuned and JJ from IAG

Mike, Tom, and Tad are in studio.  Crunch had a family gathering to attend to, and hey, family first right.  He will be in next week, and for sure they will be dragging him to Etown for the Subaru event.  No 196X Camaros buddy, lets get him a little more modern!

A surprise stop in guest, Jeff "Fireman", that Mike has known for many years takes crunches seat for the evening.  He just picked himself up a new ride a few weeks back.  A Chevy SS as he quickly pointed out.  Over time this car will be going through some nice mods.  Think LSA engine in a SS.  We will follow his progress.

A few episodes back JJ from IAG Performance called in to explain some of the ins and outs of the process of building some bad to the bone WRX platform cars and engines.  There was conversation about getting a particular configuration into the 8.XX second range in the 1/4 mile.  With no way for us to know, it turns out to be a car tuned by Tad's idol, JR Barrios of JRTuned.  JJ and JR give some details about the build, the pass, and honestly after everything was in place, how smoothly it all went.

CJs STI along with efforts from PrimeMotoringIAG Performance, Manley, and JRTuned tuning all came together nicely in a off the trailer pass of 8.909 at 164 MPH!  This is absolutely staggering from a perspective that the basic platform is just like it would be if it were off the showroom floor.

Some people seem to be under the assumption that a dyno number is the end all to be all of performance.  A dyno session can be bumped up, but the laws of physics are inflexible. One thing people should take away from this, including the caller, is that a dyno is a tool to help you achieve a result... the dyno is NOT the result.  After all, we ain't racing dynos... now are we.

034 - Power and Speed - Joe Krivickas from Precision Turbo

Mike, Tom, Crunch, and Tad all in studio tonight.

Tom is headed to Florida tomorrow AM, and it should lead to some cool stories.  2JZ piston testing for max boost stability.  How cool is that, trying to beat stuff up!  Manley is very serious about their piston business, and this proves it.  After the testing Tom is heading to the Florida 2K race.  Should be a nice week for Tom to gather some stories for the show.

Crunch is headed to Fayettville on the 16-17th of October for the 0Joe Grey and Larry T grudge final.  Big surprises, he is the judge for the rib contest.

Tad... well... has nothing.

Mike had a zero of a weekend.  His basement flooded, no car stuff over the weekend. He did get a kick out of Steve Jackson's video and Facebook page.  Funny stuff.

BUT, for sure some, if not all, of the guys will be at Englishtown this weekend for the Subaru event.  Look for Mike in a yellow 427, and be sure to ask whats up with yellow.

The people that have written in have requested more guests from the industry, and we working on lining them up.  The guys have some very good contacts in the industry.  So you asked, we have a great guy from a great manufacturer.  Joe Krivickas from Precision Turbo and Engine.  With trade shows on the way, we find out more about what Precision Turbo and Engine is up to for 2016.  Joe shares some insights on competition, rules, and a surprising area of new business.

033 - Power and Speed - JJ from IAG Subaru

Mike, Tom, Tad in studio.  Crunch ran a little late, but did make it.

Mike has made up his mind after last weeks conversation with Howard from Redline Performance.  The starting point will be his 2001 C5 Corvette.  This has Crunch a little bothered, as he is a little more "Old School"

The guys have been trying to line up a guest each show, and from what feedback they are getting, it's a great format.

Do you want a 9 second Subaru?

It's not a secret at this point that Subaru cars went through a big evolution from where they started.  The WRX changed the game in what we thought about Subaru performance.  This week JJ from IAG calls in to discuss the craft of working with the infamous "boxer" engine found in the Subaru family of cars.  Most of the Subaru guys, and Tad is most definitely a fanboy, know exactly who IAG is.  With quite an offering of services and Subaru specialized parts, IAG is set to give the guys some of the finer points of all things Subaru.

032- Power and Speed - SubieFest, Sand Show, Redline Motorsports

Mike, Tom, Crunch, and Tad all back in studio tonight.

Tom, the jet-setting world traveler he is, just returned from California and attended SubieFest and Sand Show.  (No, we are not making up the name SubieFest)  The Subaru area of sales is huge, but Tom was shocked at the size and interest at the Sand Show.  Side by Side, like the Polaris and Yamaha, are getting extremely popular and VERY serious.  Yamaha 5 speed 1000CC triple is the new toy to have, but the Polaris turbo at 144HP looks pretty serious.

The guys had a very informative conversation with tonights guest.  Late model fuel injection specialist Howard Tanner of Redline Motorsports had a great convo with the guys.  Everything from the 7 second ZO6 to the potential mid engine 2017 ZR1 is discussed.  This was a great show, and Howard Tanner was a great guest.  Would love to have him back again and get even more technical.

031- Power and Speed - Dale Cubic and Tom Martino

Mike, Tom, and Tad in studio, Crunch got caught in traffic and in for the last bit of the show.

Dale Cubic CFM Carburetion and Tom Martino MB Racing Engines

This is by far the most informative episode of the show yet.  This was a great listen.

If you think you know enough about carburetors, think again.  Dale Cubic of CFM carburetion scratches the surface of what carburetion is really like at the highest levels of competition.  Some of the NHRA Pro Stock tidbits should be enough to show what really goes into this.  Dale also give his opinion on the rule changes to NHRA Pro Stock, not from the perspective of a carburetor vendor, but from a person involved in the drag racing industry.  Dale details the classes that need carburetor enhancements due to other areas of technology affecting his business.

The Pro Stock rules have lots of people talking.  Tom Martino of MB Race Engines, 7 time NHRA national event winner, and 14th driver to be added to the NHRA Pro Sock 200MPH club, calls in.  He has a very good perspective on the NHRA Rules changes and the problems for teams, big and small, to conform to the new rules.  Tom gives the privateer perspective of the impact of these changes.  Tom is quite candid, and gives some insights about the actual time and cost involved in campaigning a NHRA Pro Stock over the course of the year.

030 - Power and Speed - Injectors, Fuel, and Carbs

Mike, Tom, and Tad in studio.  Crunch has the night off.

Somerville NJ car cruise that happens on Friday nights is a bigger deal than anyone thought.  Apparently it is the largest weekly car cruise on the East coast.  Tad he been attending these weekly.  Lots of very cool stuff there, and if you are in NJ on a Friday night, take a ride.  The guys might actually be there.

Tom talks about his new Durango, and it's pretty clear while he likes it, it needs another 100HP or so.  Looks like a turbo is in his future after talking to a guy a Dodge.  He passed on some of the modern tech packages and made it clear he does not like the auto cruise control.

Mike talks about injectors, and a very cool FI Renault video showing injectors at speed.  The video is posted on facebook and really worth watching.  Apparently it's older, but goes to show how invoved this stuff can get (Alan) in the injector area.

Live again next week Monday night at 7:00 PM EST on Mixlr.com.  Call in number 908 751 0211.  Live callers welcome, and this will be the line for giveaways.

029 - Power and Speed - Warren Johnson Carbs - Thanks For Callin'

Mike, Tom, Crunch and Tad in studio.  Everyone is back

Mike found out that two strokes still live and breathe at Yamaha.  Yep, you can still buy a YZ250 2 stroke brand new in 2016.  Mike seems like he is ready for a new toy, and my thought is he will end up in traction with a feeding tube.

Crunch attended a car show out of state.  Lots of retro cars with modern running gear and power plants.  This is a move that has been taking place for a while, much like Tom's Camaro.

Tad talks about the Somerville NJ car show every Saturday night, and it really runs the range of cars.  Telsa has it's own little little section, and I am with Mike on this one, not ready for prime time.

Tom got himself a new ride.  2016 Dodge Durango black top series.  Very sharp looking truck right outta the box.  It has sissy brakes, but he says he is gonna fix that.

Safety in racing is discussed with Alan who would really prefer to save the world one rule at a time.  It's very hard to be proactive in the safety department.  You can't predict what is going to happen, and hindsight is 20/20.  Thanks for callin'

Pro Stock EFI comes up again, and Alan returns to the phone.  OK, so Mike kinda shows his hostility, and is pretty hard on Alan.  I see both points, but Holley is not getting rich of this one no matter what.  The main winner here was NHRA.  Thanks for Callin'

027 - Power And Speed - NHRA 2016 Pro Stock Rules

Mike, Tom, Crunch and Tad all back in studio.

It seems Greys Anatomy is mentioned quite often.  Please feel free to call Mike out on this.

The NHRA published information on the already discussed 2016 Pro Stock Rules package.  The Electronic Injection section is pretty well defined, and the guys seem to think overall it was a good choice of nailing things down as they did.  Engine builders always look for areas of exploit, and the people that write rules "try" to account for those areas.  It's never easy, but you have to start somewhere.

Street Outlaws armageddon was run, and Chief came out on top.  Mike and Tad are still particularly impressed that it is a real Pontiac foundation engine.  Hats off Chief and congrats.

Giveaways are being formulated, and it's fairly clear this will be for live listeners only.  I can tell you behind the scenes there are some pretty good ideas on exactly how to do this.

Live again next week Monday night at 7:00 PM EST on Mixlr.com.  Call in number 908 751 0211.  Live callers welcome, and this will be the line for giveaways.
